The Facts about the Nature of Skill-related Fitness

There are several different components of skill- related physical fitness.

The six components of skill-related physical fitness identified in this book were chosen because they are among the most important to sports performance and easiest to measure. There are probably other abilities that contribute to the ability to perform skills of all kinds. For example, many experts consider various perceptual abilities such as depth and distance perception (ability to judge depth and distances accurately) and visual tracking (ability to visually follow a moving object) to be skill-related parts of physical fitness. Stretching Exercises

There is a correct way to perform stretching exercises.

Remember that while stretching may help to alleviate muscular soreness, it can also cause soreness, so easy does it. Start below your threshold if you are unaccustomed to stretching a given muscle group, then work up to your target zone. The guidelines that follow will help you to gain the most benefit from your exercises.

  • Warm the muscles before you attempt to stretch them.
  • Exercises that do not cause a muscle to lengthen beyond normal may maintain, but will not increase, flexibility.
  • To increase flexibility, the muscle must be overloaded (stretched beyond its normal length), but not to the point of pain. Remember, you want to stretch muscles, not joints! (more…)

Some Issues Considered about Preplanned Exercise Programs

Preplanned exercise programs are a popular form of exercise.

The results of nationwide surveys in the United States and in Canada confirm that home calisthenics are among the most popular forms of exercise among adults. Preplanned programs are especially popular because someone else directs your performance.

There can be some problems in performing pre- planned exercise programs.

Because preplanned exercise programs are planned by one person (or group) for individuals of many different levels of fitness, they may not be equally effective for all people who use them. (more…)
