When family members support your exercise behavior you are likely to continue it. However, exercise may take time away from family activities. If family members, especially one’s spouse, feel that exercise is interfering with family obligations, regular exercise may diminish. It is important to involve family members in planning for regular exercise.

Support from friends and peers reinforces exercise adherence.

The Facts about Predisposing Factors

Knowledge of exercise and fitness predisposes you to exercise adherence.

It was noted in Concept 1 that many people have misconceptions about exercise. Dispelling these misconceptions and providing people with knowledge can help them know the value of exercise, how to perform it without injury, and how to get the most from their efforts. By itself, knowledge does not guarantee that people will start an exercise program. However, a sound fitness and exercise education is one factor that predisposes people to lifetime exercise.

The Facts about Disease Risk Factors

There are many different positive life-styles that can reduce the risk of disease.

Many of the factors that contribute to optimal health and quality of life are also considered risk factors. Changing these risk factors can dramatically reduce the risk of hypokinetic diseases such as heart disease, obesity, back pain, and cancer, as well as other diseases such as infections and sexually-transmitted diseases. Lack of exercise, poor nutrition, smoking, abuse of alcohol and other drugs, inability to cope with stress, and poor personal hygiene are all risk factors associated with various diseases.
