Facts about the Elements Determining Flexibility

Flexibility is specific to each joint of the body.

No one flexibility test will give an indication of your overall flexibility. For example, tight hamstrings and back muscles might be revealed by a toe-touch test, but the range of motion in other joints may be quite different.

Flexibility is influenced by age, sex, and race.

As children grow older, their flexibility increases until adolescence when they become progressively less flexible. (more…)

Contrary to some claims, Hatha Yoga is not a good program for developing physical fitness.

Some advocates of Hatha Yoga claim that regular practice of the asanas (positions) will bring about improved flexibility, grace, serenity, relaxation, sleep, vitality, endurance, circulation; strength and firmness of muscles; strength of vital organs and glands; taut, smooth skin; ideal body weight; recovery, alertness, and clarity of mind; will cure arthritis, the common cold, diabetes, gallstones, menstrual disorders, piles; and will maintain good vision and hearing.

There is no scientific evidence to support most of these claims. Hatha Yoga will not help you lose weight, trim inches, remove flab, improve endurance, maintain proper circulation, strengthen glands and organs, or improve complexion. Neither will it cure diseases. (more…)

People have always searched for the fountain of youth and the “easy,” “quick,” and “miraculous” route to health and happiness. This search has included the area of physical fitness, especially exercise and weight loss. Because of the popularity of these two subjects, the mass media have made it possible to convey as much misinformation as information. All people should seek the truth to protect their health as well as their pocketbooks. This concept discusses some myths and separates fact from fancy.
